OLD TOYS
- Check toys frequently for wear and soiled dirt.
NEW TOYS
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
- Leather – untanned or vegetable tanned only. Conventional tanning uses uric acid & formaldehyde.
- Rope – Cotton or sisal OK. No nylon rope.
- Keep strands short (1” – 4” length), unless knotted or twisted. Make sure there are no loops to trap heads, wings, ect. Kroted rope can catch toes.
- Polly rope made of polyurtain and has been tested and is safe for birds.
- Fabric – Keep loose strands cut.
- Chain – Closed link chain is best. No jack chain or double looped chain.
- Size appropriate.
- Stainless steel esp. important for birds who play/chew on chain.
- Quick lines – Avoid dog lead clips, carabiners or any spring – loaded clip, key rings, get stainless of bird crews on them.
- Avoid jingle bell trap toes/beaks.
- Avoid costume jewelry (dangerous metals, small parts, entrapment issues)
- Pick size appropriate toys (varies w/individual birds)
